Reiki is a form of alternative therapy often referred to as energy healing. It originated in Japan in the early 20th century and was developed by Mikao Usui. The term "Reiki" is derived from two Japanese words: "Rei," meaning universal, and "Ki," meaning life energy. Thus, Reiki translates to "universal life energy."
Reiki is based on the concept that life energy flows through all living things and that this energy can be channeled to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. When this energy is low or blocked, it can lead to illness or stress. Conversely, when it is high and free-flowing, it promotes health and well-being.
Reiki works by channeling universal life force energy through the hands of a practitioner to a recipient, aiming to restore balance and promote healing. I essentially act as a conduit for this energy, in which the energy will flow where it's needed most in the recipient's body.
During a Reiki session, I will typically begin by discussing any specific concerns or intentions with you. You'll then lie down fully clothed on a massage table in a serene, quiet environment. I will gently place my hands on or just above various parts of your body in a series of hand positions. As the session progresses, you might feel sensations such as warmth, tingling, or a gentle pulsating as the energy flows through you. Some people also experience a deep sense of relaxation and may even drift off to sleep. Throughout, the atmosphere remains calm and soothing, often accompanied by soft music. By the end of the session, you will feel deeply relaxed, rejuvenated, and experience a sense of emotional clarity and balance.
As you leave the session, self care tips are given such as:
Hydration: Drink plenty of water after your session to help flush out any toxins that may have been released.
Rest: Give yourself time to rest and integrate the healing energy. Avoid strenuous activities immediately after your session.
Mindfulness: Pay attention to how you feel in the days following your session. Keep a journal to track any changes or insights.
Although, you may feel instant relief after 1 session, it's always important to maintain your reiki sessions. Energy blockages that contribute to imbalances often take time to clear. Multiple sessions allow for a gradual unblocking and realignment of your energy pathways. Each session builds on the previous one, promoting continuous improvement. Just as layers of an onion are peeled away one at a time, multiple Reiki sessions address different layers of your being. This approach facilitates deeper and more comprehensive healing.
